Microsoft offered a paid way out. Indeed's data shows who is still hiring. Assess before you offer exits.

On Monday, Microsoft opened a Voluntary Exit Offer for staff at level 70 and below in four countries VERIFIED Source C01. The same day, Proton told staff it would "re-interview" them about AI use, with jobs at stake CITED Source C05. Meanwhile, US postings for electrical engineers sit at 152 against February 2020, and software development at 79 VERIFIED Source C04. Before your firm opens an exit window, can you show which skills you would lose?

Lead: exits offered, skills unmeasured

Microsoft's chief people officer, Amy Coleman, introduced a "time-limited, voluntary program" on Oct 26 for employees at level 70 and below in participating teams in Canada, India, the UK and the US. It offers financial support and career-planning resources. "The Voluntary Exit Offer is new for us. We'll learn from it," she wrote VERIFIED Source C01. The post gives no headcount and does not mention AI. Press reports put eligibility at about 60,000 people, citing an unnamed source; Microsoft has not confirmed that figure FLAG Source C02. Microsoft reports quarterly results after the market closes today CITED Source C19.

Proton went further. An internal email seen by 404 Media says staff will be "re-interviewed" about how they use AI and that "these re-interviews are consequential" CITED Source C05. According to AI Weekly's summary, the sessions run Nov 4–11 and outcomes "may lead to changes in roles, responsibilities, and continued employment" CITED Source C05.

Our read (opinion): two different instruments are now in play. A voluntary exit lets people choose; a re-interview lets the employer choose. Neither tells you, on its own, whether the team that remains can grant an agent its permissions, halt a run, retrieve the record and redesign the workflow. That evidence has to exist before the window opens, not after.

One chart: who is still hiring

Indeed's occupational postings show where demand is moving. Against February 2020, electrical engineering stands at 152 and production and manufacturing at 124, while customer service is at 87 and software development at 79 VERIFIED Source C04. Overall postings are 2.8% above a year ago, and AI-related postings are 7.3% of all postings, above the 3.3% peak of 2022 VERIFIED Source C03.

US job postings by occupation versus February 2020Indeed Job Postings Index, Oct 16, 2026, February 2020 equals 100: electrical engineering 152, production and manufacturing 124, nursing 111, banking and finance 107, customer service 87, software development 79.Electrical engineering152Production and manufacturing124Nursing111Banking and finance107Customer service87Software development79Feb 2020 = 100

Figure 1. Indeed Job Postings Index by occupation, Oct 16, 2026 (Feb 2020 = 100). VERIFIED Source C04

Read the chart carefully. Software development postings are still low against 2020, yet they are up 21.3% over the year; banking and finance are up 11.7% and nursing is down 1.0% VERIFIED Source C04. This is a shift in mix, not a collapse. Data-center postings are at 247 against June 2024 VERIFIED Source C03.

What people do with AI at work is shifting too. OpenAI reports that making decisions and solving problems was 21.6% of US work requests in Q1 2026, while "interacting with computers" fell from 11.7% to 6.7% over a year. That measures message shares, not jobs VERIFIED Source C06.

Workforce scenario: a bank's model-risk team after an exit window

Illustrative scenario, not a client case. Facts cited are from the ledger.

A regional bank runs agents for transaction monitoring. As Lloyds says it does, the bank keeps trained specialists accountable for final decisions CITED Source C21. Finance announces a voluntary exit window. Fourteen validators sit on the model-risk team; three of them are the only people who have halted an agent in production.

Five questions before any exit window

  1. Which roles touch an agent today, and who can grant, halt, retrieve and redesign for each? (Write names, not teams.)
  2. Is that capability evidenced, with an assessment record a reviewer can retrieve, or assumed?
  3. If two of those people accept the offer, who covers the halt drill next week?
  4. Does any AI used to assess staff trigger notice, explanation or audit duties where you operate? (Section 9.)
  5. Who signs that the remaining team can run the agents: the CHRO or the line executive?

Workforce FAQ: did you know?

Yesterday's tabletop: the answer

Tuesday asked who answers first when a support agent leaks a customer's data: A) the CISO, B) the business owner, C) the vendor, D) nobody yet. Our answer (opinion): A runs the first hour. B owns the fix. C answers to you, by contract. If you answered D, today's checklist is where to start.
