The Future of Life Institute's 2026 AI Safety Index gave every major frontier lab a C or below — except Anthropic, which earned the field's sole C+. OpenAI and Google DeepMind landed at C, Meta at D+, and xAI, DeepSeek, and Mistral effectively failed. That result lands in the same stretch that Anthropic also topped frontier-lab revenue and confirmed Andrej Karpathy has rejoined its research team.
Separately, Google, Microsoft, Salesforce, Snowflake, and ServiceNow have lined up behind a shared agent-interoperability standard, framed by trade press as a counterweight to the open approach Anthropic and OpenAI have built around. In the same week, Microsoft expanded that same open standard's support across Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook — a sign the standards question is still very much unsettled.

FIS partnered with Anthropic to bring agentic AI to banking, starting with financial-crimes detection, with BMO and Amalgamated Bank among the first live deployments. JPMorgan's chief analytics officer confirmed the bank will deploy long-running autonomous agents able to act independently for one to two hours within 2026. Roughly half of financial institutions are now piloting or past-piloting agentic AI.
Healthcare — documentation wins are real, data governance is the wall
Ambient documentation tools have delivered measurable time savings at Intermountain Health, Cooper University Healthcare, and Mercy — one nurse reported roughly two hours saved per 12-hour shift. But as hospitals move from pilots to enterprise-wide deployment, fragmented records and weak data governance, not model performance, are producing outputs clinicians can't reliably act on.
